IRS To Give Decision On Trump Taxes By May 6
TREASURY SECRETARY STEVEN MNUCHIN SAYS A FINAL DECISION WILL BE MADE ON RELEASING TRUMP'S TAX RETURNS BY MAY 6
(CNN) – As expected, the IRS did not turn over president Trump’s tax information to the house ways and means committee chairman by a Tuesday afternoon deadline.
But Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says his department will eventually make a decision on the request.
Last week, Democratic Congressman Richard Neal wrote a letter to the IRS, requesting Trump’s personal and business tax returns going back six years.
Trump’s attorney already informed the Treasury Department it can turn down the request.
In a letter to Neal, Mnuchin says the Treasury Department will take what he calls “final action” on the committee’s request by May 6th.
After receiving Mnuchin’s letter, Neal says he will consult with lawyers about his next steps.
Democrats believe they have the power to ask for Trump’s tax information under IRS code 6103.
The law states that three people, the House ways and means chairman, the head of the joint committee on taxation and the chairman of senate finance committee can ask for anyone’s personal tax information for their committee’s use.
