House Comm Sends Letter To IRS Demanding Trump Tax Returns
REP. NEAL TARGETS IRS COMMISSIONER IN NEW DEMAND TO HAND OVER 6 YEARS OF TRUMP'S TAX RETURNS
(CNN) – House Ways and Means Committee Chairman Representative Richard Neal is targeting the IRS commissioner to get president Trump’s tax returns.
Neal sent Charles Rettig a two-page letter Saturday asking for six years of returns, with a deadline of April 23rd to hand them over.
Treasury Secretary Stephen Mnuchin told Neal Wednesday he would not meet a previous request to turn over the president’s tax records.
He questioned whether Neal has the authority to ask for the returns and said he would consult the Department of Justice on the matter.
Neal’s new letter to Rettig insists the committee has the right to request the information.
He appears to be relying on an obscure tax statute from the 1920s, which seems to give the House Ways and Means Committee Chairman authority to ask for anyone’s personal tax information.
A court battle testing that statute is expected.
