Border Patrol Facilities 3K Over Capacity
IMMIGRATION FACILITIES ACROSS US-MEXICO BORDER ARE OVER CAPACITY
(CNN) – Border Patrol facilities are bursting at the seams.
As of Tuesday morning, the Department of Homeland Security says there are more than 12,000 migrants in custody at the U.S. Mexico border.
The agency can only hold and process around 9,000.
Officials are seeing most overcrowding issues in the El Paso, Texas region where they’re running into supply and demand issues.
An official said the optimal processing time for migrants is about an hour and a half per person but as more people enter facilities wait times can increase.
Capacity issues have also forced officials to release migrants from custody, even if they have upcoming court hearings.
A DHS official said that’s something that Border Patrol hasn’t done since 1998.
