MORE THAN 2,000 PEOPLE IN IMMIGRATION CUSTODY HAVE BEEN QUARANTINED AMID AN OUTBREAK OF CONTAGIOUS DISEASES
(CNN) – More than 2,000 immigrants in U.S. custody are under quarantine for being exposed to a contagious disease.
In the past year, health inspectors have investigated 51 detention facilities for mumps, chicken pox and influenza, according to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
During that time period, the reported cases of mumps grew from zero to 236.
Just in Texas, officials say nearly 200 people have contracted the virus since October.
The agency says it is committed to ensuring the welfare of all those in custody with comprehensive medical care.
But it’s unclear if the agency is taking additional steps to deal with the outbreak in facilities.
