An Army troop with an unusual background has become Soldier of the Week.

Army Staff Sergeant Eric Dean initially trained as a combat engineer.

Dean went on to become the best of the best in his field by successfully completing the challenging sapper course.

Sapper is a soldier responsible for tasks such as building and repairing roads and bridges, laying and clearing mines.

His skills were utilized during 17 missions in southeast Asia to recover POW and MIA personnel from past conflicts.

Dean is a jump master and currently serves as an airborne instructor at the airborne school at Fort Benning and now because of continued Army excellence Staff Sergeant Eric Dean has become the Columbus Rotary Club’s soldier of the week.
