Auburn sophomore forward Unique Thompson was named the SEC Player of the Week for women’s basketball, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Thompson averaged 17.0 points and 10.5 rebounds in Auburn’s wins last week over Ole Miss and Georgia. She picked up her ninth double-double of the season and 16th of her career Thursday night at Ole Miss when she scored 20 points to go with 12 rebounds, helping Auburn to its fourth road win in SEC play. She had 12 points in the first quarter alone and was a career-best 10-of-12 at the free-throw line.
In the Tigers’ come-from-behind 59-58 win over Georgia on Sunday, Thompson was one rebound shy of a second straight double-double with 14 points and nine rebounds. Of those, seven points and five rebounds came in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Tigers erased a 13-point deficit in the final 8:00 to snap a four-game skid against the Lady Bulldogs.
Thompson is the fourth Auburn player to be honored by the league so far this season. Janiah McKay was named Player of the Week after the Tigers’ wins over Coastal Carolina, North Carolina and Elon just before the holiday break. Freshmen Robyn Benton and Brooke Moore have also earned Freshman of the Week honors this season.
The Tigers play their second straight home game Thursday night when they host No. 19 Kentucky at 6 p.m. The first 500 fans will receive a set of Auburn women’s basketball trading cards.
