Makayla Martin was selected to the 2019 SEC Softball Preseason Team, the league office announced on Thursday.

Martin will return to the pitching circle for her senior season after posting a 15-7 record with a 1.36 ERA — the second-lowest single-season ERA in school history — in 31 appearances in 2018. Martin’s 1.21 ERA in conference play was the second among SEC pitchers. She was tabbed the starting pitcher in 24 games and completed eight with four shutouts in 134 innings as a junior. Her 33 walks to 529 batters faced, .202 batting average against and three home runs allowed last season were career bests for the San Diego, California native.

Martin will enter the 2019 season already ranked in six different Auburn career pitching record categories: ERA, Wins, Shutouts, Games Started, Walks Allowed and Opp. BA. She is expected to join four more categories — complete games, innings pitched, appearances and strikeouts — throughout the upcoming season.

Martin was one of eight seniors selected to the 12th annual Preseason All-SEC Team. Three juniors and three sophomores rounded out the team.

Alabama, Florida and LSU had two representatives each, while Arkansas, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, South Carolina and Tennessee all had one player selected.

The Preseason All-SEC Softball Team is voted on by the league’s head coaches and consists of a minimum of 14 players. Each SEC head coach voted for five infielders, four outfielders, three pitchers, one catcher and one designated player/utility. No ties were broken.
