Scholar Athlete: Lanett High School Basketball & Football, Jaquarious “Quay” Houston
Lanett high school has no shortage of state championships in recent years.
Junior Jaquarious “Quay” Houston has been apart of that success with two rings in basketball and one in football.
This year he knows leadership roles need to be replaced with the loss of key seniors.
“We had to have a lot of people step up this year. They know their role. We’ve been working very hard in practice since football season ended, but everybody knows that our expectations are real high since we had our seniors leave, but I think we are going to do a good job replacing them,” says Lanett junior point guard Quay Houston.
Not only is he excelling on the field and on the court, but also in the classroom with a 3.5 GPA.
His motivation to perform at a high academic level comes from the support of his teachers and coaches, but most importantly from home.
“My mom. She’s always been on me since I was little, like I would be scared if I had a B. I would be like ‘mom I got a B.’ I would be very scared,” says Houston.
Quay is currently taking AP english and trigonometry II. While those classes present its own challenges, it’s not his only one.
Quay and his teammates are still getting used to moving from class 2A to class 1A.
“Yeah right now 1A, their courts are way smaller, like we got these big players with these small courts and right now it’s not matching up, like they make one move stepping out of bounds. We’ve just got to adjust to it,” says Houston.
His goal for the season is to win another state championship.
Congratulations to Quay Houston of Lanett high school this week’s WLTZ scholar athlete.
