Family Arrests At Border Break Record For 4th Month
CBP: NUMBER OF FAMILIES AND CHILDREN ARRESTED AT SOUTHERN BORDER AT A RECORD HIGH.
(CNN) – Customs and Border Protection says the number of families crossing the U.S. border from Mexico is at an all-time high.
U.S. Border Patrol says it arrested 27,518 family members in December, up from the previous December which had 8,120 arrests.
Arrests on the border are used by the government as a measure of illegal crossings.
In president Trump’s formal address to the nation Tuesday night he cast the situation along the U.S.-Mexico border as a national security threat, citing a surge of apprehensions.
While family crossings are on the rise, the overall illegal crossings remain historically low.
In the early to mid-2000s, more than 100,000 migrants could be arrested crossing the border in a given month.
