The Auburn track and field team will open the 2019 indoor season at the UAB Blazer Invitational on Friday at the Birmingham CrossPlex. Competition begins at 9 am CT with the men’s shot put while running events start at 10:45 a.m. with the women’s 5,000m run.
The meet with feature 17 teams including Southeastern Conference opponents Alabama, Georgia, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Tennessee.
“This meet is more of a unique meet that we’re used to go to for the first competition,” Auburn head coach Ralph Spry said. “This meet has more middle distances with 300 and 500 meters. It will give us a chance to train through a few things and see where, not so much how fast we run, bug where we are more from a mental and physical stand point.”
Auburn will have over 30 athletes competing, including several making their first appearance in a Tiger uniform.
“Our throwers group is really going to be one of our strengths this year,” Spry said. “We have a good group of throwers that will step up for us and we have some really good distance runners that will fill the void. Overall, a really, really young team, but we have some balance across the board.”
The meet will not only be a good opening test for the Tigers, but will also give them a chance to compete where the 2019 NCAA Indoor Championships will be located. The 200 meter banked CrossPlex track will host it’s the nation’s top indoor event, March 8-9.
