Fans will get their first glimpse of the 2019 University of Georgia men’s and women’s tennis teams at the inaugural ‘First Serve’ event this Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Lindsey Hopkins Indoor Tennis Courts.

The first-ever ‘First Serve’ will raise the curtain on the 2019 spring tennis season as both squads will be in attendance for team exhibitions, poster signings and a kids/adult tennis  clinic. Jeff Dantzler, University of Georgia and Athens radio personality and longtime Georgia tennis supporter, will serve as the event’s emcee.

“This is something we are all really excited about,” men’s tennis head coach Manuel Diaz said. “There is so much rich history with both our men’s and women’s programs, and part of that history is having the absolute best collegiate tennis fans in the nation. What better way to honor them than to have this event and let them get a sneak peek of our two teams. It’s going to be a blast.”

In what promises to be another fun season of college tennis in Athens, the Georgia women’s team is ranked No. 5 in the Oracle/ITA preseason rankings, while the men, ranked No. 12, are one of seven Southeastern Conference schools to be ranked in the ITA top-25.

“It is a brainchild of Drake and Jamie,” Georgia women’s tennis head coach Jeff Wallace said. “Others have their  midnight madness, first look or first peek. We decided to throw out a tennis term in First Serve and it is an opportunity for our fans to get introduced to our team, see them play a little bit and then interact with them on the court with the clinic. I think it is something that can really grow. I hope we have a good turnout and ultimately in the years upcoming it can be something that becomes super exciting.”

Following Saturday’s ‘First Serve,’ the Georgia women’s tennis team opens the season by hosting the ITA Kick-Off Weekend on Jan. 25-26, while the men will travel to Atlanta for the MLK Invitational on Jan. 19-21.
