Georgia men’s tennis senior Emil Reinberg teamed up with fellow American collegians to claim the eighth gold medal in 10 years for Team USA at the 13th Master’U BNP Paribas Collegiate Tournament on Sunday in Grenoble, France.
Team USA’s loss to Great Britain at the 2017 Master’U Tournament was the team’s first since 2011. This year, in a rematch of last year’s championship, the American tandem of Jada Hart (UCLA) and Maria Mateas (Duke) won a third-set tiebreaker to clinch Team USA’s 4-1 victory over Great Britain and to reclaim the title for the United States.
“I’m so proud of Emil and Team USA,” Georgia head coach Manny Diaz said. “It was a great effort by the team and a great experience for Emil and his teammates.”
In the first day of the event on Friday, the mixed doubles team of Reinberg and Hart defeated Belgium’s duo of Jakob Kevelaerts and Mathilde Devits, 8-5.
Reinberg competed in both singles and doubles matches in Saturday’s semifinals. First in the singles match, No.2-ranked Reinberg defeated Ireland’s Dan O’Neill by a score of 6-2, 6-4. Later, he and Brandon Holt (USC) got another victory for Team USA when the duo defeated Ireland’s team of Dan O’Neill and Sean McCullagh, 8-3.
