It was a record-setting night for the fourth-ranked Columbus State University women’s soccer team, as the Lady Cougars defeated Georgia Southwestern 14-0 on Wednesday. The Peach Belt Conference match was played at the Walden Soccer Complex.
The 14 goals are the most in a single match in Lady Cougar history. Maddie DeFranco put her name atop a CSU list as well, breaking the single-match points record with nine in the victory.
“This was a great night for us to get everyone into the match and Maddie DeFranco was finally able to get in the scoring column,” head coach Jay Entlich said. “We were very efficient and effective around the net as well, which is something we work on every day.”
The goals came rolling in for Columbus State (11-0-1, 8-0-0 PBC), with Kimmy May and Riley Clark each scoring in the opening minutes on passes from Flo Spano.
Rachael Sweigard got her night started with a goal in the 25th minute, before DeFranco got rolling. DeFranco finally broke through with her first collegiate goal in the 39th minute, then quickly added her second just 34 seconds later. Sweigard added her second in the 44th minute, with an assist from DeFranco to send the match to the half at 6-0.
Goals continued to flow after the break with Olivia Jarrell netting her 12th of the season on Senior Night. Fellow senior Brooke Nail got into the scoring column in the 55th minute.
Spano added a goal two minutes later before Sarah Beth Nies tallied her first Lady Cougar goal in the 59th minute. Sweigard then finished off her first collegiate hat trick in the 62nd minute.
Caitlyn Peterson notched her first tally of the season on CSU’s 12 goal of the evening followed by DeFranco completing her trifecta. Nies closed out the scoring in the 77th minute with her second.
DeFranco registered three goals and three assists on the evening to set the single-match record. DeFranco and Sweigard are the first Lady Cougar teammates to record a hat trick in the same match.
The Lady Cougars outshot Georgia Southwestern (2-12-0, 0-8-0) 38-0 in the contest.
