Game of the Week Preview: Americus-Sumter @ Columbus

The Columbus Blue Devils are desperate for a win this week at home as they host the Americus-Sumter Panthers.

“Right now we are not where we want to be, but the next five games are really going to define that one way, or another and the guys know that every game now, not that they aren’t all important, but in order for us to make the playoffs we are going to have to win the next five football games,” says Columbus high school football head coach Phil Marino.

“We have to get back on track somehow started off kind of bad, but we have to get back on track and I think we can do it this week,” says Columbus high senior outside linebacker Joshua Scarbrough.

Both teams are very comparable offensively each averaging around 260 offensive yards per game. They are also both 2-3 on the season.

“I think we both have the same type of athletes. I think we both have the same type of offenses and we will just have to see we are going to have to play penalty free and just do all the right things in order to win,” says coach Marino.

That plays into coach Marino’s motto of  “do your job.”

“I think the kids just have to understand that, because when we watch film we see things that just don’t, you know why are we doing this, why are we continuing to do this, you learn this every day and we just tell them if 11 guys are doing their job we should be successful,” says coach Marino.

Columbus will be missing both starting running backs on Friday due to injury, but the mindset in their locker room hasn’t wavered.

“It’s a lot of intensity. I feel the intensity rising. I feel that we are going to come out Friday night and hit them in the mouth,” says Columbus high senior offensive lineman and offensive tackle Brent Epps.

Kickoff is set for 7:30 eastern time at Kinnett stadium.
