About 37K People Arrested on Border in August

THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ARRESTED FOR CROSSING THE BORDER LAST MONTH IS UP FROM LAST YEAR, BUT AT HISTORICALLY TYPICAL LEVELS

(CNN) – About 37,500 people were apprehended crossing the southern border into the U.S. illegally last month.

That’s according to a source familiar with the numbers.

The number was much lower at this time last year, but that’s because 2017 saw an unusually low amount of border crossings.

This year’s august data is fairly typical in a historical context.

It’s also tracking normally in a seasonal context, with a large uptick from July’s crossings.

Border crossings tend to drop in the middle of summer and pick up again in the fall.

It is not yet known how many people tried to cross the border at legal crossings.
