Pope Francis Issues Letter Condemning Sex Abuse
POPE RELEASES LETTER CONDEMNING PENNSYLVANIA SEXUAL ABUSE SCANDAL
(CNN) – The Pope is breaking his silence about the sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic church.
In a statement released Monday by the Vatican, Pope Francis said, “If one member suffers, all suffer together with it.”
He went on to say, “These words of Saint Paul forcefully echo in my heart as I acknowledge once more the suffering endured by many minors due to sexual abuse.”
The statement comes after a Pennsylvania grand jury detailed the sexual abuse of more than 1,000 children by hundreds of priests for decades.
The Pope also said, “No effort to beg pardon and to seek to repair the harm done will ever be sufficient.”
This weekend the Pope will travel to Ireland, which dealt with a sexual abuse scandal in 2009.
Pope Francis is expected to meet with victims during his visit.
