Study: Some Android Apps Record Screen Activities

RESEARCHERS FIND SOME ANDROID APPS ARE RECORDING A PHONE'S SCREEN AND SENDING THAT INFORMATION OUT TO THIRD PARTIES

(CNN) – Your smartphone may be spying on you!

Researchers at Northeastern University spent a year studying over 17,000 popular apps found on Androids.

They wanted to know if any of them were covertly using the microphone to record audio.

They found no evidence of that.

But the group did find that some apps record the user’s screen, then share that information with third parties; presumably to sell that information to marketers or data brokers.

And at least one app didn’t disclose the action on its privacy policy.

The Google Play policy says you must disclose to users how their data will be collected.

The researchers say they will be presenting their work at the privacy enhancing technology symposium conference in Barcelona next month.
