564 Border-Crossing Deaths Missing From Border Patrol Figures
CNN FINDS THAT BORDER PATROL FAILED TO COUNT HUNDREDS OF MIGRANT DEATHS
(CNN) – The Border Patrol apparently failed to count hundreds of migrant deaths from California to Texas.
CNN looked at official records and identified at least 564 more deaths of people crossing illegally than the Border Patrol’s tally of 5,984.
More than half of the uncounted deaths identified happened in the past four years.
Border Patrol’s Chief of Strategic Planning and Analysis acknowledges the agency’s death tally is incomplete because of different standards of how deaths are determined and reported.
Other than the Border Patrol, no other federal agency, and none at the state level in California, Arizona, New Mexico, or Texas, seeks to comprehensively track migrant deaths.
