Scholar Athlete: Greenville High School Girl’s Basketball, Nuriyah Slaton
Greenville high school’s Nuriyah Slaton has been on quite the journey her freshman year. She became a starter on the varsity basketball squad, a captain, and now a state champion after last nights win over Marion County in the title game.
“It’s been tough, because you feel a lot of pressure. This is your freshman year, so you are trying not to play like a freshman as people would say,” says Greenville high school’s freshman guard Nuriyah Slaton.
It didn’t take long for her team to notice her leadership qualities, being named a captain just days after tryouts.
“It meant a lot, because I feel like they know what I can do and they know that I can lead the team on after Brittany and Peaches are gone,” says Slaton.
Greenville’s basketball team is built around senior guard Brittany Davis. Throughout the last year Brittany has become someone that Nuriyah looks up to.
“You have one of the top scorers in the state on your team, so you should try to learn as much as possible because when she’s gone like you don’t have it no more,” says Slaton.
Outside of basketball she is excelling in the classroom with a 3.5 GPA is in 2 AP classes, Beta club and interestingly enough in the Culinary Arts club.
“I like to cook. It started out when I was younger, like I’m always just in the kitchen like oh can I help can I help?,” says Slaton.
She hopes to one day play collegiate basketball for UCONN. Congratulations to Nuriyah Slaton of Greenville high school, this week’s scholar athlete.
