Lanett Football is Heading to the AHSAA Class 2A State Championships

There has been a lot of first’s for the Lanett football team this year. The first 14 win season. The first semifinal victory and the first opportunity for a state title in program history.

“It’s overwhelming. I mean but at the same time you still have to understand what you are going to do and what you have to compete to do,” says Lanett head football coach Clifford Story.

These guys know what it takes to be state champions. A majority of the football team play basketball and have two back to back state titles.

“They play with so much poise and composure you know there is nothing that fazes them but I guess it’s just with experience because they’ve been there and done that,” says Story.

This years team is much more sound on defense. Last year the Panthers allowed 312 points this season they’ve only allowed 169 shaving off more than half. The Panthers not only dominate on defense, but offense as well with a balanced attack in the air and on the ground averaging 223 receiving yards and 204 yards rushing each game. With all that said coach Story just wants his team to enjoy this experience.

“I want them to be loose you know and just have fun, do what they have done for 14 games. I told them it s no pressure. Let me absorb all that. Let me have all that. You know and if I’m relaxed they will be relaxed,” says Story.

The stage is set to take on Leroy high school this Friday who has a rich tradition in winning. The Bears haven’t been in this position since 2010 and will be fighting for their 6th state title.

“I mean they’ve got a real good football team. I mean we are going to be in for a dog fight and we know that and I know they know that they are going to get one from us also,” says Story.

“We told Coach Story in the spring that we were going to go 15-0 and win a state championship so we are going to prove it to him,” says Lanett football senior running back Terrion Truitt.
