(CNN) – When you check out at your favorite warehouse club store, you expect the bill to be high.

But you’re saving money in the long-run by buying in bulk, right? Not so fast.

According to a new study, when shopping at warehouse clubs; you actually spend more money on packaged foods than if you stuck to traditional grocery stores.

Five percent more, to be exact and the bad news doesn’t stop there.

You also consume 8% more calories and spend 15% more time shopping.

But there is a way to buck these averages and actually save money.

Experts say you should plan your trips carefully; avoid making making more frequent visits in an attempt to justify the annual membership fee and avoid impulse purchases.
