Doctors Continue to Prescripe Codeine to Minors

Some doctors ignore warnings to stop prescribing codeine to minors.

Despite a warning from the FDA some doctors continue to prescribe codeine for children after surgery.

The warning, issued in 2013, revealed significant safety risks about the use of cod in kids undergoing tonsil or adenoid removal.

A new University of Michigan study found codeine prescribing dropped by about 13 percent after that warning.

But about 5 percent of children were still being given codeine following these surgeries in 2015.

The warning was issued after the FDA received several reports of respiratory depression and death among children taking codeine after surgery.

Most were ‘ultra-metabolizers‘ .. who converted codeine rapidly to morphine in the liver.
