Happy 73rd Birthday Smokey Bear
SMOKEY BEAR CELEBRATES 73 YEARS OF PROMOTING WILDLIFE PREVENTION
(CNN) – Happy 73rd birthday, Smokey Bear.
Smokey has taught generations of Americans that they can play a critical role in preventing wildfires.
The U.S. Forest Service authorized his creation, and the first poster featuring his image was released on October 10th, 1944.
That poster showed Smokey pouring a bucket of water on a campfire.
And, believe it or not, there was a real-life Smokey Bear.
In 1950, a badly burned bear cub was found in the remnants of a wildfire in New Mexico.
After his recovery, he was taken to the National Zoo in Washington, to become the living symbol of Smokey Bear.
He received so much fan mail that he had his own zip code.
