Northside Aiming to Not Just Make it to Playoffs, but Advance
NORTHSIDE HASN'T ADVANCED PAST FIRST ROUND OF PLAYOFFS SINCE 2005
One local football team is trying to “keep moving forward”.
The Northside Patriots have consistently made the playoffs over the last few years but haven’t seen progression.
It’s something they’re aiming to change.
“The last three years, we just haven’t played well,” said head coach Morgan Ingram. “I don’t know what the reason is and that’s something we’ve been looking at but we definitely just need to play better in those (playoff) games.”
It all starts now with Northside trying to kick their season off on a high note.
To progress in the playoffs means to have a good regular season and region standing, but this season won’t be easy.
The Patriots are a fairly young team, in fact they only have three guys returning on the offense.
“We feel good about those kids and what they’re able to do,” Ingram said. “It’s just a matter of us coaching them up, getting them ready and getting them to perform early and perform well early.
But while the offense is fairly new, the defense has a lot of experience.
The entire line is back from last year including Caleb Johnson, a senior linebacker who’s seen his recruiting pick up drastically since the 2016 season ended.
“It was just kind of crazy because before then I really wasn’t getting any attention from any colleges and it was all there at once,” Johnson said.”
Johnson went from zero to 12 Division-I offers in just a few months. Why?
“There’s a lot of kids out there who are 6’3″ 245 lb. guys out there but none of them that can move like me,” Johnson explained.
Moves as in a sub-4.6 40 he says he was clocked running at an LSU camp.
But whether it be his speed, his size, or his character, Johnson is first and foremost a Patriot.
He wants to set an example for others on this team who dream of playing big time ball.
“To show these people that I can and people can make it from basically nothing, it’s just like a great feeling,” he said.
Northside opens the season on August 18th against Kendrick.
