A Family Affair at the Barbasol Championship

Opelika is home this week to the 3rd annual Barbasol Championship, but what you may not know is that this Tournament happens to be pretty unique for two golfers.

Davis Love III and his son Davis Love IV or “Dru” will both be competing in this week’s PGA Tour event.

Davis is a Major Champion, winning the 1997 PGA Championship. He also won the Players Championship twice, the last back in 2003.

His son Dru is about to graduate from the University of Alabama and recently played in his first Pro event, the 2017 U.S. Open where Davis caddied for him.

The two have never really played against each other in a big tournament like the Barbasol and say being able to do so is pretty special.

“It’s nice now that we’re doing the same thing,” Davis said. “I’m trying to schedule my schedule where he’s going to play rather than in the old days he was following me around, now I’m following him around.”

“Get to learn a lot from him, get to learn how to do on the course things, off the course things just here with my dad and have him be here for my tournament, be here for this, it’s fun,” said Dru.

The two haven’t casually played the Robert Trent Jones Trail at Grand National but have heard good things about the course.

“I’ve heard great things,” Davis said. “This is what I’m used to, hot summer on Bermuda grass and it’s kind of right up my alley.  So I’m looking forward to playing the golf course over the next couple days and getting ready for Thursday.”

“We’ve heard a lot of good things about it,” added Dru.  “I’ve got a lot of friends who have played here, and going to school a couple hours away, get to hear a lot about it. It’s a great golf course from what I’ve heard and just excited to get out here and try it.”

The first round of the Barbasol Championship kicks off Thursday, July 20th.
