Scholar Athlete: Brookstone Soccer Midfielder, Will Byrd

For Will Byrd, soccer is year round.

“During the fall and summer, I may do some soccer camps, and in the winter I do indoor soccer at CSU,” he said.

Byrd has been playing on Brookstone’s varsity squad for the last three seasons and is a starting midfielder as a Junior.

He’s seen his passion for the sport grow thanks to the extra time he puts in in the off-season.

“I’m training for this, for high school soccer, to support my school,” he said. “It really helps grow the passion for Brookstone.”

Byrd also has a passion for academics.

His GPA is an astounding 4.7 and is planning on graduating with 12 AP classes.

He’s on the math team and has been in the last two school musicals.

Combined with all he does for soccer, Byrd stays busy and doesn’t mind it.

“If I‘m stressed out at school, playing relieves stress and helps you get better,” Byrd said. “If I‘m just really tired or physically exhausted from playing, I can relax and not do anything but focus on school.”

Byrd has no plans to play soccer on a scholarship but won’t completely rule out the sport.

He loves to play and is hoping he can do that at the next level.

“I’ll definitely play club soccer hopefully there too,” he said. “I want to keep playing the sport. Maybe not at that highest level but just in general want to keep playing.”

After high school, Byrd hopes to study engineering.
