GSW Dedicates Building to Slain Officers

Office of public safety building will be named in officers' honor.

AMERICUS, GA (WLTZ) — A university made sure its community would not forget the two officers shot dead in the line of duty when it renamed a building on their honor.
On Monday, Georgia Southwestern University’s interim president, Dr. Charles Patterson made a proposal to the Board of Regents. He proposed dedicating the Office of Public Safety building to Officer Nicholas Smart and Officer Jody Smith.

The two were gunned down by suspect, Minquell Lembrick in Americus in December 2016.

“We knew that this is such a significant event in our community — certainly a tragedy. We wanted to do what we could do,” said Public Relations representative, Steve Snyder. “We’re just honored to play a part here and maybe, in some small way, help in the healing process for the community.”

Snyder confirmed the board approved the request.

The dedication ceremony will be set for a later date.
