National Scout Award given to the Late Rex Milner

The William H. Spurgeon III Award for the Medical Explorer Post at Saint Francis Hospital

The 2017 William H. Spurgeon III Award was presented posthumously to Rex Milner recognizing 28 years of service leading the Medical Explorer Post at Saint Francis Hospital.

The ceremony was held on Tuesday, February 7, at 7 p.m.

The award is the highest National Exploring recognition for individuals and organizations contributing significant leadership to the Exploring program.

It is the first time the award is being presented within the Boy Scouts of America Chattahoochee Council.

At 17, Milner began working at Saint Francis Hospital.

He then attended nursing school.

In 1981 he returned as a Nursing Supervisor until his death in October 2015.

He started the Medical Explorer Post at Saint Francis Hospital in 1986, introducing hundreds of young men and women to healthcare careers.

Milner was known for his commitment to teaching and helping others according Keith Higgins, now head of the hospital explorer post.

The William H. Spurgeon III Award started in 1971 to honor him as a major leader in the development of special-interest Exploring.
