Ft. Benning Community Mourns the Loss of Lt. Gen. Harold (Hal) Gregory Moore Jr.

Legendary Combat Leader Has Passed Away

The Fort Benning community is mourning the passing of retired Lt. Gen. Harold (Hal) Gregory Moore Jr.

The West point graduate and legendary combat leader passed away February 10th. He was also a New York Times best selling author.

In 1964, Moore was assigned to Fort Benning and commanded a battalion in the newly formed air mobile 11th Air Assault Division, undergoing air assault
and mobility training and testing.

During the Vietnam War, he served as the commander of the 1st Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment.

The actions of that unit in the Battle of Ia Drang in 1965 were the basis of his book “We Were Soldiers Once, and Young.”

In 2002, the book became a movie, “We Were Soldiers,” starring Mel Gibson and Sam Elliott. The role of Lt. Col. Moore was played by Mel Gibson.

The funeral Mass will be held at St. Michaels Roman Catholic Church in Auburn, Ala., followed by a memorial service and internment at Fort Benning.

Details are being finalized and will be announced soon.
