Stuff the Bus drive kicks-off in Lee County

LEE COUNTY, AL - It's a community involved drive that's helping local students with what can often be a costly need.

"Last year we averaged that school supplies were between forty and eighty dollars a child...which can be pretty expensive if you have a lot of children," Chandler Barrett with the United Way of Lee County said.

The annual Stuff the Bus drive put on by the United Way of Lee County is a group effort by the non-profit, local businesses, and schools to collect school supplies for local children in need.  Last year the drive raised over $10,000 worth of supplies...This year they're hoping for even more.

"It's really important that these kids have the supplies that they need to start off the school year it helps them to not have to worry about coming into school without any supplies...they can start out on a good foot focusing on learning and not on the fact that they couldn't get the supplies that they needed,"  Barrett said.

Donators can drop-off supplies at various businesses across Lee County...including the Heritage Bank of the South in Auburn.

"We just really want to show our support for the children we have here...Auburn, Opelika, Lee County schools...we just really want to show our support to them by giving them the tools they need in school," Michelle Woodard with Heritage Bank of the South said.

The supplies will be evenly distributed to Lee County, Auburn, and Opelika schools.

"..and then the school works with students that need the supplies to distribute those," Barrett said.
The drive started this earlier this month and lasts through August 2nd with a final event at Tiger Town in Opelika.
