AUBURN, AL - It's something so simple that can make a huge difference.

"Even though we might know where our next meal is coming from, our hearts and our heads must be with those people who they don't know where their next meal is coming from," Auburn resident, Chrissie Faupel said.

Saturday is the Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive where anyone can feed the hungry just by putting food next to your mailbox.  Last year 74 million pounds of food was donated across the United States during the single day drive.  In east Alabama about 36 thousand pounds was donated.

"The bag showed up in my mailbox so it's very easy to put the food in it.  I didn't even have to go to the store and buy more food.  I had the food in the pantry already," Faupel said.

To participate all you need is a bag or box, non-perishable food items, and a mailbox to set your food by.

"we are moving into one of the most challenging times for food banks.  There's no thanksgiving holiday or christmas holiday to remind people to give and yet summer time is when many of our food pantries have almost the highest demand," Executive Director of the Food Bank of East Alabama, Martha Henk said.

The donations will fill bins at local food banks like the Food Bank of East Alabama who will give the food right back to the community, and fill plates of those in need.

"We provide food to about 190 agencies theres are emergency food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, rehabilitation centers and more than 60 percent of them rely on us entirely for their food," Henk said.

Canned and dry foods will work.

Letter carriers will be picking up the food rain or shine.  Put the food out early, and if you put the inside your mailbox make sure to put the flag up.
