Wage hike on a roll

Posted: Updated:

(NBC News) - The effort to raise the minimum wage is on a roll in Washington again - literally.

The "Give America a Raise" bus rolls up to a divided Congress this afternoon.

Democrats insist the federal minimum wage must go up to $10.10 an hour to lift working Americans out of poverty. "If we raise the minimum wage, 14 million children will have a parent who makes more money." Senator Tom Harkin, (D) Iowa.

Republicans say paying workers more will stress small businesses and cost half a million jobs. "The answer to these lost wages isn't more lost jobs," said Rep. Eric Cantor, (R) Virginia.

Just yesterday in Michigan... President Obama visited a deli whose owner says raising wages helped him bring in 50 million dollars.

The president told Republicans. "You've got a choice. You can give America the shaft, or you can give it a raise."

The push is working, but not in Washington.

Seven states and the Nation's Capital raised their minimum wage since President Obama called for it last year.

But with Democrats and Republicans at odds, it's unlikely Washington will budge. "No one wants the other to get the advantage or the issue and therefore you wind up with the hot rhetoric at both ends," said Former RNC Chairman Michael Steele.

Senate Democrats need five Republicans to push through a minimum wage increase. So far, no Republicans support it.

And that's the easy part. Getting it through the Republican House at this point seems almost impossible.
