Trial Begins for Auburn Man Charged with 2011 Fatal Shooting on Southern Union Opelika Campus

Jury selection started Monday for the murder trial of Thomas Franklin May III. May is accused of killing his mother-in-law and injuring three others on the Opelika campus of Southern Union State Community College back in April of 2011.

37-year-old May, faces capital murder and attempted murder charges stemming from the fatal shooting. The Auburn man is accused of shooting into a van driven by his estranged wife, Bethany May. Their 4-year-old daughter and other members of Bethany May's family were inside the vehicle. Bethany May's mother, Brenda Marshall Watson, was killed and Bethany May's daughter and grandmother were injured.

Thomas May pleaded not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect. The state is seeking the death penalty.
