AL governor declares state of emergency before snow

Posted: Updated:

Cullman, AL (CNN) - Preparations were already underway in parts of the southeast Monday night.

As many areas unaccustomed to snow and ice, brace for another shot of winter.

In Alabama, the governor declared a state of emergency effective at 6:00 am Tuesday to help road and emergency officials stay ahead of the storm.

Crews are out in force to pre-treat roads and officials are advising everyone to avoid traveling altogether.

Phyllis Little with the Cullman County EMA says, "We're encouraging people, once they get home tonight, to just stay at home... and no travel unless it's an emergency, unless it's necessary travel.  Just stay at home and enjoy the nice winter day, winter night tonight.  Delay travel as much as possible -- as long as possible in the morning to give the roads a chance to thaw some."

A winter storm warning is in effect for several counties in north central Alabama from 9 pm Monday until midnight Wednesday.
