AUBURN, AL - Auburn University student, Elizabeth Orantes is continuing the legacy of a close friend, Scott Shockley.  Shockley passed away from cancer last summer.

"He always put others before himself.  No matter what he was going through.  He always made sure to check up on everybody else and see what he could do for others," Orantes said.

Shockley, an Auburn freshman and manager of the Auburn baseball team, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma, a cancerous bone tumor that formed in his knee when he was in high school.  After chemotherapy and surgery, Orantes said Shockley was fine, but then the cancer came back in his lungs. he died months later last July.

"It was probably one of the hardest deaths I had to experience," Orantes said.  "Looking back, I said I could sit around and be sad or do what he loved to do which was help people."

So, Orantes has set a goal.  She's raising $5,000 Network at Columbus Regional.  A promise she made to Shockley.

"Right before he passed away this summer and he was getting really sick I just made that last promise to him, that even if I couldn't reach the $5,000 I would do everything in my will power to get it," Orantes said.

"I know that he's definitely smiling down at me and he is just totally my guiding light in this whole process," Orantes said.

Orantes said she keeps quote by shockley framed in her home.  It reads, "remember the words Scott Shockley lived by...'remember the past, plan for the future, but live for today, because yesterday is gone and tomorrow may never come."  Her motivation to continue the legacy of a dear friend.
