MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Federal agencies have joined with local law enforcement to create a task force to cut down on gang-related crime in central Alabama.
FBI agent Jeanette Williams says the Central Alabama Gang Safe Streets Task Force covers from Dothan to Montgomery to Auburn.
It involves federal, county and city officers and will coordinate efforts to identify gangs involved in drug trafficking, money laundering and violent crimes. U.S. Attorney George Beck says the task force will not only react to crimes, but will work to prevent crimes.
Montgomery Public Safety Director Chris Murphy said Thursday that the gangs in central Alabama are usually neighborhood groups that lack a strong organizational structure.
Officials said similar task forces have already been formed in Birmingham, Mobile and Atlanta.
