COLUMBUS, GA - Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr's department is now in the middle of three death investigations that have happened at the county jail in under a month.
"Upon further reflection and consideration I have contacted and requested the assistance of the GBI in the investigation of the recent events at the Muscogee County Jail," Sheriff John Darr says.
Many are asking why now?
"I had to rethink everything and after reconsideration and reflection I decided it was best," Darr says.
Lori Carroll, whose death is still unknown, died on October 24. WLTZ First News reached out to her son Timothy Chesnut who says, "I am looking forward to what the GBI has to say about what's going on in the Muscogee County Jail. I just want answers as to what happened to my mother."
Coroner Buddy Bryan also chimed in about Sheriff Darr's change of heart..."I think it was the smart path to take considering the circumstances."
Less than a week after Carroll's death, Maurice Grier died from an aneurysm and just last week, Issacc Kindred died from manual strangulation and blunt impact to his head allegedly by his cell mate.
In wake of the recent announcement, WLTZ First News went out into the community to speak with one local about the recent events.
"I don't believe in coincidences. It's just kind of sketchy to determine who is responsible. Is it the jail people who are responsible in essence of not providing a safe haven for the inmates or is it just one of those things that just happens and they happen," Merrill de Young says.
"I want to reassure the citizens of Muscogee County that I take every concern very seriously and the consultation of the GBI will ensure a fair and mutually beneficial outcome," Darr says,
Sheriff Darr say's he won't be answering anymore questions until the investigation is complete.
