CALERA, Ala. (AP) — The senior pastor of a church in central Alabama is being indicted by a Shelby County grand jury on a rape charge.
An arraignment is scheduled Nov. 4 for 49-year-old Harry Vester Jones, pastor of the New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church. Jones was arrested in mid-April on accusations that he raped a 39-year-old woman on April 2.
Al.com reports Jones has been free on $60,000 bond and his attorney, John Medaris, has said his client is innocent. Medaris has said nothing in the case indicates that the interaction between his client and the victim was forcible.
Jones was a defendant intervenor in a case launched by the Shelby County government that challenged the Voting Rights Act.
