Dunes save boardwalk from fire not flood this time

SEASIDE PARK, N.J. (AP) — A raging fire that erupted on a newly rebuilt boardwalk in two Jersey shore resort towns has destroyed more than 50 local businesses and caused millions of dollars in damage.

The fire destroyed the Seaside Park section of the boardwalk on Thursday, but makeshift sand dunes saved the northern portion in neighboring Seaside Heights.

Authorities say there is no immediate indication whether the 6-alarm fire that broke out near a frozen custard stand in Seaside Park was suspicious or accidental. An investigation is to get underway on Friday.

Seaside Park borough Councilwoman Nancy Koury says local business owners worked hard to recover from Superstorm Sandy's devastation and "now it's all gone."

"Haven't we been hit enough?" says Shirley Kreszl, who has rented a summer home in Seaside Park for decades.
