At Carver High School, everything is larger than life.
Whether it's the past stars, like first-round NFL Draft pick Jarvis Jones, or the present stars, like 6'6" Defensive End and Alabama commit Mekhi Brown.
"We definitely have the talent to win state," said Quarterback Juwon Pass.
But there's one thing even bigger.
"Every time we step on the field it's a big game," said Carver Head Football Coach Joseph Kegler.
"Carver's good every year, so everybody expects us to be good," said Pass.
"I love it," said Mekhi Brown. "That's what all great players want"
Carver High School is home to the past seven Region titles and the 2007 State Championship.
"Our expectation is to do the best we can," said Coach Kegler. "We have to win for ourselves, and as long as we get better everyday, the end result will be fine."
But the coach that brought them that state title, Dell McGee,
is gone. This year, it's former Offensive Coordinator Joseph Kegler taking the reigns.
"It's a little strange looking down the field and he's not there," said Kegler. "But we just have to keep getting better. I'm sure I'll be talking to him later in the day."
"They all came up together," said Mekhi Brown. "So it's no real difference to me. Same procedures, same drills, same everything."
Looking at the roster, the Tigers are very young at some key positions. Quarterback Juwon Pass is just a Sophomore. But the talent is certainly there, he's already got an offer from the University of North Carolina.
"He does a good job of keeping his composure and keeping his teammates up," said Coach Kegler. "He's more mature than being in the 10th grade, because he does a great job of leading already. He constantly calls, texts, wants to watch film. He's a great kid and wants to be a better football player.
With multiple Division I Prospects, Carver has a good shot at landing another Region title,
and maybe even another State title.
But for right now?
"I'm just ready to play. Bottom line," said Brown.
Carver's season unofficially starts August 22nd at the annual Carver/Central scrimmage.
