Push for tax reform likely to resurface in Ga.

ATLANTA (AP) — A discussion on tax reform could be on the horizon in Georgia.

After a Georgia tax code overhaul attempt failed a few years ago, state lawmakers returned the following year with a narrower agenda and eliminated a handful of taxes, including the "birthday tax" on motor vehicles.

At the time, there was a promise more reform was coming. Now, after a legislative session devoid of a broad discussion on taxes, there are signs conservatives plan to push for action next year.

Virginia Galloway, director of the Americans for Prosperity Foundation-Georgia, says there's a need for at least a reduction in the state income tax.

Gov. Nathan Deal and House Speaker David Ralston say they support the idea, but caution lawmakers to consider budget realities before making changes.
