AUBURN, AL - PGA golfer, Jason Dufner and wife Amanda Dufner arrived at Yarbourgh elementary school in auburn early Tuesday morning.  The couple came to speak with students about their fight against childhood hunger through the Blessings in a Backpack program.

"it's a neat program my wife found out about through the PGA Tour Wives Association" said, Jason Dufner.  "We did a little research and realized there wasn't really anything like this in the east Alabama area."

Blessings in a Backpack is a national program that discreetly gives children on federal free and reduced price meal programs a backpack of food each week.
And, the Dufners have partnered with Auburn university to bring that program to schools in Lee County.

"it's neat to come back and see that the kids are liking the program, and spend a little time with them" said, Dufner.

"We were approached back in the fall about being the office that kind of took the logistics, and the ground operations on.  And, of course when they said the Dufners were involved, we jumped on it" said, Jennifer Commander, Program Assistant at Auburn University.

Since January every Thursday Auburn Students have met to put together that backpacks that are then sent to the elementary school and handed out to the children that need them.

"we kind of bridge the gap on weekends. Between school lunches on Fridays and then when kids return on Mondays" said, Beth Sedgwick, Director of Fund Accounting at Blessings in a Backpack.

So far a total of 274 backpacks are given to kids at Yarbrough Elementary School in Auburn and Carver Primary School in Opelika.  However, the Dufners say they look forward to adding more Lee County schools in the future.
