The postseason is a familiar place for Columbus High School Baseball.
The Blue Devils have 13 State Titles, 7 State-Runners Up, and 29 Region Titles. The last time they didn't win the Region? You'd have to go back to 2005. Not to mention, CHS has won the State Title three of the past four years.
But this year, signs pointed to a rebuilding year for the Blue Devils.
CHS moved up a division and lost eight of their nine starters from last year's State Championship team. But excuses aside, the Blue Devils found a way to win the Region - their 30th all time.
"I think the coaches have really pushed us," said Junior Pitcher Will Bice. "I think we're out to prove to everybody that it's not just about losing eight starters."
"Our key to success has really been trying to accomplish the goals that our class last year accomplished," said Senior Pitcher/Infielder Hunter Swilling. "We just try to strive for that, and be the best that we can be."
"Our pitchers are not overpowering," said Columbus Head Coach Bobby Howard.
"But they've done a great job pitching. We just didn't have the quality defense that we had before because they [opposing teams] put the ball in play a lot."
"Last year we had some power pitchers, the last three years, four years, so it was a different dynamic for us on defense. But our kids found a way to win the region. We're a No. 1 seed, so we'll see what happens," said Coach Howard.
The Blue Devils kick off the first round of the GHSA State Tournament this Friday with a best-of-three series against Lanier at Randy Jordan Field, starting at 2:00 p.m.
