Deal says heightened security measures in place

Posted: Updated:

ATLANTA (AP) — Gov. Nathan Deal says top state officials are staying in close contact with federal authorities investigating the Boston bombings and now suspicious letters sent to federal officials.

Deal said Wednesday that he has ordered "heightened and tightened security measures on an internal basis," such as instructions on how to handle incoming mail.

Deal says the head of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency is working with federal authorities, taking advice on where to increase security and then coordinating with state and local authorities to take action. Deal says that includes increasing security at events with large crowds.

Authorities continue to investigate Monday's explosions at the Boston Marathon and letters sent this week to President Barack Obama and a Mississippi senator that have preliminarily tested positive for ricin.
