Panel approves tight Alabama General Fund budget

Posted: Updated:

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama House committee has approved a $1.75 billion General Fund budget to fund most non-education state agencies during the fiscal year that begins Oct. 1.

The tight spending plan calls for nearly level funding for most agencies.

Prisons Commissioner Kim Thomas says the spending plan underfunds his agency and will make it difficult to improve problems with care of female inmates.

Thomas says the budget falls short of what the system needs to operate at an ideal level.

He says the proposed budget means the system will not be able to move forward on work to upgrade women's facilities.

The budget is slightly more than the $1.749 budget for the current fiscal year. The full House is expected to consider the budget next week.
