MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — Attorney General Luther Strange is re instituting a program to encourage schools to come up with new ways and technology to curb school violence.
The attorney general has sent a letter to education officials and principals inviting them to make nominations for what he calls the 2013 Awards of Excellence.
He says determining ways to reduce school violence is a priority for his office. His office has offered the awards before, but Strange says this time the emphasis will be on the use of technology to ensure school are safe. Strange discussed the program during an appearance at a Montgomery civic club Monday.
Strange says there has never been a more important time to ensure that schools are safe referring to a recent deadly shooting at a Connecticut elementary school.
