AEA files Lawsuit to block Bill - WLTZ 38 | Columbus Georgia Regional News & Community

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) — The Alabama Education Association has filed suit to try to block Governor. Robert Bentley from signing legislation providing tax credits to parents who move their children from failing public schools to private schools.

AEA's suit argues that the Legislature violated the open meetings act and other laws when it passed the legislation with a quick series of votes Thursday night. AEA is asking Montgomery Circuit Judge Charles Price to block the bill from becoming law.

The governor is planning to sign the legislation Tuesday afternoon.

AEA's suit came after the state school superintendent and others urged the governor to make changes in the bill and send it back to the Legislature for additional revenue.
