Sometimes it's not where you are but how far you've come.
For Hardaway, cracking the code of a successful defense, has been quite the enigma. But with the help of Junior Andon Mack, it's something they've improved on significantly, according to Hardaway High School Basketball Coach Alex Davis.
"At times we kind of quit playing defense as a team and that hurts us," Davis said. "Since his freshman year, Anton has improved on his defense, and offensively he's getting better. But really the biggest thing he's done for us is improve our defense."
But basketball hasn't always been so easy for Mack. It's something he's worked on. But that hard work he's learned from basketball also helps in school, too.
"Like in basketball, in a game, you go through tough obstacles," said Mack. "You get tired, you have to fight through it. Just like in the classroom, if you find something hard, you have to ask the teacher and try to get past it," said Mack.
"Like trigonometry, finding the sides to a triangle. Yeah, at first I didn't know how to do it, but soon found out how," said Mack.
His hard work and persistence has surely paid off, though. Not only is he a better defender, he's also better in the classroom. The proof? His 3.8 GPA.
"He brings the hard work to the team," said Coach Davis. "He's going to be early he's going to stay late, and work on his game trying to get better for the team. But his mom is the one that really pushes him to make good grades, because he knows, if he doesn't make it on the athletic ground he's going to make it academically."
