Homebrewing legal in 48 states but not in Alabama

Posted: Updated:

(WHNT)-Homebrewing is legal in 48 states ... 49 if an Alabama lawmaker has his way.

State Representative Mac McCutcheon is trying to get a bill passed that would let people brew up to 15 gallons of beer, wine, cider or mead every three months.

It's a change that McCutcheon says is long overdue.

"We have many, many people in this state that like to homebrew. There's a lot of interest in this and this is a hobby."

Last year some Republican lawmakers opposed a similar bill on religious grounds.

The legislation prohibits making stronger types of alcohol, including bourbon, whiskey and vodka.

Currently Alabama and Mississippi are the only states where homebrewing is illegal.
