Friends set up fund for man killed in officer-involved shooting

LEE COUNTY, AL - Friends of the man killed in an officer-involved shooting set up a fund to raise money for funeral arrangements.

33 year-old Eddie Nevels was killed on Saturday when a Lee County Sheriff Deputy shot at him because he says he was in fear of his life.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office says Nevels' car came up stolen and he refused to pull over. They say he allegedly tried to run the deputy over, causing the deputy to open fire.

Nevels was shot in the head. There was a seven-year-old boy in the passenger seat. He was not injured.

The deputy has been suspended without pay pending the outcome of the investigation. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case.

Nevels' friends and family say the don't believe he would have tried to run over the deputy.
